The United States Department of Agriculture recently issued a final version of the genetically modified food label, which requires that more than 5 percent of foods containing GM ingredients be labeled with GM information in an appropriate manner from January 1, 2020. This is the first national mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods in the United States.
The new regulation, known as the National Bioengineering Food Information Disclosure Standard, calls genetically modified foods bioengineered foods. According to the new standard, GM food labeling threshold is 5, GM content is no more than 5 without tagging. Foods that contain more than 5% of GM ingredients must disclose GM information to consumers. The logo has a variety of options, including text descriptions, icons with “bioengineering”, electronic or digital links, and the use of text messages. Small food manufacturers or small packaging can also choose to provide phone numbers or web addresses. For consumers to inquire about GM information. The new rules will take effect on January 1, 2020, and small food companies with annual revenues of less than $2.5 million can defer implementation until January 1, 2021. Mandatory compliance date is January 1, 2022. Some anti-GM groups say the new rules are lax and lax in their content and form. The Center for Food Safety, an organization dedicated to promoting organic agriculture, says the 5 percent threshold is too high to allow many foods that use genetically modified materials to be exempt from labeling. Since the implementation of the regulations on the Safety of Agricultural transgenic organisms in 2001, China has been carrying out a marking system for agricultural genetically modified organisms (GMOs). ” Said Tombo. The regulations stipulate that the catalogue of agricultural genetically modified organisms under the marking administration shall be formulated by the competent agricultural administrative department under the State Council in consultation with the relevant departments under the State Council. Readjustment and publication: the sale within the territory of China of agricultural genetically modified organisms listed in the catalogue of agricultural genetically modified organisms shall be marked clearly; Agricultural genetically modified organisms listed in the catalogue of agricultural genetically modified organisms shall be marked by production, sub-loading units and individuals; if they are not marked, they may not be sold; the labels of agricultural transgenic organisms shall specify the names of the main raw materials containing genetically modified components in the products; Where there is a special scope of sale, the scope of sale shall also be specified and sold within the specified scope. Tombo said the first generation of genetically modified crops are insect-resistant, herbicide resistant traits that are primarily good for growers and not directly beneficial to consumers, and are therefore susceptible to consumer opposition. With the development of transgenic technology, there will be more and more GM foods which are beneficial to consumers’ health, such as increasing nutrition and eliminating harmful ingredients, so the labeling of GM foods is expected to promote the development of transgenic industry.
